18th Annual and Last Rose Sale
If you don’t have any of Heide’s heritage roses beautifying your yard yet, this year is the last chance you’ll have to acquire any of the beautiful, easy to take care of roses that do very well in our area. Heide is one of the original founders of the former Wakulla County Humane Society, now known as CHAT, and has done a tremendous job for homeless animals in our county. After roughly 30 years of working for animals and their welfare it is time for her to move on, and take care of that famous bucket list.
Heide’s interest in antique roses started in the late 80’s early 90’s. Modern roses were too much of a challenge for her. All that spraying for insects and leaf disease were something that she could not tolerate. Antique Roses, also known as Heritage Roses are wonderful in the landscape. They require a minimum of care and will reward you with many months of blooming. If the roses have a little black spot from time to time and a few bugs eat some of the blooms….so be it. The leaves come back in no time. It is thrilling to look at a rose such as the Bourbon “Souvenir d’ la Malmaison” and know that Napoleon’s wife Josephine had that same exact rose growing in her garden. List of roses.
All proceeds from this fundraiser benefit CHAT programs like Kind News Magazine for our elementary school children, the Seniors’ Pets Meals on Wheels and more. Don't miss this event - mark your calendar!

Kay
Kay was taken in by CHAT of Wakulla as part of a litter when they were about 8
weeks old and she was soon adopted by an elderly couple. When Kay Kay was
roughly 10 months old she was returned because of her high energy level, and we
found out that she had been kept outside with little human interaction.
Two more families tried to make her part of their life, but she was just too energetic, and did not get the exercise she needed. Then we thought we had the perfect home for her; a young lady who was a fanatic exercise nut, and a runner. Getting to go on runs was perfect for her much needed exercise, and it made her tired, making her manageable. There was also a small dog in the household, and whether it was out of jealousy or for other reason we will never know, Kay Kay attacked the little dog. Needless to say, she was returned to us once again.
This was heartbreaking for Kay Kay as we noticed in her behavior. She had in a very short time latched onto her new owner emotionally, and was in a depressive state. One thing about Kay Kay, she is a very smart and an immensely loving animal. As her last return was toward the end of CHAT managing the adoption enter, we decided to hire a trainer for her.
Kay Kay has been living with Greg Oyer since the end of December and getting one-on-one training, along with being introduced to other dogs and how to behave around them. We have to say, the change in Kay Kay is incredible!
Greg's first task was to break her of chasing after small dogs, and to come when called. Next was to walk well on a leash, and heel. We have visited her on several occasions, and have been amazed at the changes. She still has lots of energy, and needs space to run but, she is rather well behaved nowadays.
On our last visit, we took lots of pictures and videos of her. She followed instructions, walked incredibly well on a lead, heeled without lead, and came when called. Towards the end of our visit, a young couple came up and Kay Kay slowly approached the young lady who bent down to greet her. I don't think she expected to be hugged by this dog but well, Kay Kay gently put both her paws on either side of the woman's neck, and put her head on her shoulder. It brought tears to our eyes.
Kay Kay will stay with Greg until she finds the right owner for her, someone that is loving, but firm. A fenced yard with lots of space is also equired. Her new owner has to agree to take some free follow up training sessions with Greg Oyer, more to train the new owner rather than the dog to ensure a lasting relationship.
Kay Kay is a little over two years old, spayed and up to date on her shots. If you would like an interview to meet Kay Kay, please send an email to [email protected] and provide your name and phone number.
